Annoying Web 2.0 Stuff

Posted by hank, Mon Jun 30 23:31:00 UTC 2008

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if no one ever upgraded to Web 2.0? I mean, really, what have we gained. Here’s a list of things that I personally find really stupid about the phenomenon:

Lists

I think there’s a list for everything now. Everyone wants to be David Letterman. Here’s a lists of lists of things, found on Digg by searching for “10 things”:

Now, lists are all fine and dandy, but nowadays, most lists people put up are simply a ploy to get traffic, show more ads, and make money. Now, I have no problem with this at all - profits are the best incentive. But, really, it’s getting a little insane. Instead of lists, which are easy to skim, why not hide all your points in some real writing? Many of my friends and I, who are internet addicts, have realized that our reading speed and comprehension have suffered over the years due to the way we surf, which is skimming everything for that small chunk of information you want.

    Add this to your “list.”
Peoples’ self-righteous critiques of shit they can choose to avoid.
Don’t like top ten lists? Don’t go to them. Oh noes!! But stumble upon sends you to places with bad blog formatting!!! It’s the end of the world!!

RE: Giant Footers My blog probably isn’t the best example, since what you’ve referenced isn’t the footer at all. The footer that you see on every page/post is the bar that contains the copyright statement, subscribe link and other meta info. The games, music, and “quick bits” only appear on the homepage and are separated intentionally as they all lead the reader away from my blog - hence the different coloured (green) headings as well.

@matt: ah - good point! They do lead the reader away, which is exactly what I was getting at. I’ll try to revise with a better example…

Matt’s right. Change your blog post. Use this footer-mullet.

Hmm, I should blog more. This post reads to me as “Five ways to annoy hank.”
